Actually Achieve Your Goals: Setting SMART Goals

January 04, 2023

Are you tired of setting goals and never seeming to reach them? It could be that you’re not setting SMART goals! SMART goals were developed as a guide to help you make, and achieve, the goals you set by following the SMART acronym.

Specific

The first step in setting a goal is making sure it is specific. What exactly are you looking to accomplish? Make sure you goal is set answering what you want to accomplish, why it is important, and what you’ll need in order to achieve this goal.

Measurable/Motivating

Once you have a specific goal in mind, it’s time to figure out how to measure your success. How will you know when you have reached your goal? What steps will you take to reach it? Use this opportunity to also brainstorm ways to keep you motivated as you track your success.

Achievable/Attainable

As the saying goes, the sky is the limit when it comes to what you can accomplish! However, you need to ensure you have the right setup to achieve this goal. For someone working at NASA, they may have a goal to help build a rocket ship. For someone working in this field as an engineer, this could be attainable. However, if you’re working a corporate desk job and have the goal to become an astronaut, this might not be attainable… at least not in this moment! Ask yourself, is achieving this goal possible with the resources you have? If not, how can you set smaller goals in the meantime to build up the resources you’ll eventually need?

Relevant/Realistic

Similar to the goal needing to be achievable/attainable, ask yourself if the goal is relevant to you and your beliefs/values. Is this goal driving you forward, down the right path? Does the outcome match the effort you will put in?

Timeline

Finally, the last step in setting SMART goals, you want to set a timeline for your goal. Deadlines help motivate us, and check-in dates are great for tracking progress! Use this timeline to review any challenges you’re facing and to brainstorm ways to overcome them.
